I have an aging 15 inch MBP released at around 2006 or so. I have updgraded the RAM and would like to upgrade the internal hard drive to a larger and faster one, I currently have a 120GB @ 5400 RPM. I have found this one and it seems just what I need. I would like to know if this is fully compatible with my laptop. All I know is that I need it to be a SATA drive and be able to fit inside the case, other than that I dont really know much. It might be a silly question but all these HD connections are standard correct? This model should fit my laptop?

Thanks again guys

EDIT: I am dual booting on my laptop so that is why I need a larger drive, I also have an external 500GB drive that I backup to, is the increase in speed any better than what I currently have?

A little reading goes a long way. To answer your question though, yes it will fit and work.

The increase RPM will make certain things faster like startup, application loading, and HD read-write speeds.

Just remember that since a 7200 rpm drives runs faster it will also, as a consequence, generate more heat. Hardware manufacturers take this into consideration because tolerances inside of cramped laptop quarters make every extra degree in temp more critical. However, you shouldn't have an issue.

I wouldn't expect to see a huge difference in speed though unlike moving from platter drives to solid state.

Have the Hitachi Travelstar 500 GB , 7200 rpm HDD in my MBP. Just got a chance to transfer a 10 GB video file over from my HP desktop through a USB file transfer cable. The Hitachi drive is fantastically quiet. I had the MBP in front of me and the only thing I could hear was the fan from the desktop and the occasional clicks of the desktop HDD from several feet away. It got a little warm under the palms like it gets when watching videos but nothing out of the ordinary.

+1 for the Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM 500GB. I installed it in my MBP and noticed a nice bump in performance. I would consider a 500GB drive over a 320GB. The difference in cost is only a few dollars.
