Hi, I am going to be ordering the MBP 17'' with 8gb of ram, core i7 and the 512 SSD from apple. i have searched for a few hours looking for what kind of SSD apple puts in the MBP 17'' for there 512gb model. some say Samsung, Toshiba and others say the intel x25. supposedly the Intel x25 SSD are very good.

i was thinking of doing it myself but i re-thought it and the money im going to be spending on it, i dont want to risk opening it.

does anyone know? do you have a 512 GB SSD in your MBP? did you ever look to see what kind it is?

Thanks!!

Stef

and one more thing.........if i do it myself, will it void the apple care warranty?

On the brand in the MPB someone else will have to answer that for you.

BUT, read Anandtech's tests on the Intel X25 SSD's and you will find they are the best SSD's out there. Others are catching up fast but the Intel's are still great.

Apple uses different brands and you aren't going to know until you look inside. Replacing your HDD/SDD doesn't void the warranty. Same goes for upgrading RAM.

Kingston and OCZ make some good ones but 500GB SSDs are uncommon to say the least
Even the OCZ vertex 2s don't go up to 500gb and those are considered better than the x25s
other popular brands include Crucial and Patriot

IMHO I don't see the sense in buying a SSD for that sort of money, where with a good backup strategy in place you could bypass the need for a SSD as far as extra reliability goes due to no moving parts, and could have more than 10 x 500GB 7200RPM HDs.

If you can't be swayed.... http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/inter..._SSD_Sandforce

I've been running a Super Talent MasterDrive 128GB (shows up as a Samsung in Disk Utility)drive for over a year now with no issues. All my junk is on a network volume so space is no issue. I copy movies, iMovie projects, TV shows and the like from the network drive when I need them. Even with way to much crud on the drive, I'm using only about 80GB and have 40GB free most of the time. That usage includes installations of Win7x86 and openSUSE11.2 32-Bit on the SSD. Did I mention that VM's freaking FLY running off a SSD? Good luck!

I have a Samsung PB22-JS3 128GB SSD in my MBP and it has been an awesome experience. Like mentioned above the VM's fly, the startup and shutdown times are amazing. When I first got the Mac the startup and shutdown times were awesome compared to Windows, but the SSD made it a whole different machine. I have mine under just under half full and have not experienced any issues at all with performance.

I've been running the Torqx M28 256GB in my Core i7 MBP for a few months now - very pleased with the performance. Boot times, app startup and performance are lightning fast with both OSX and Win7 on the BootCamp side.

BTW, this brand/model gets 5 star user reviews on the Newegg.com site. I would stick with the ones with the best reviews (Patriot, Kingston, etc)
