I have a 1st gen Macbook pro 2ghz intel core duo with 2 gb ram. I am a video editor and just started traveling a lot. When rendering and encoding in Final Cut Pro it seems to take this mac book forever to do stuff. If I upgrade to a Mac book pro 15-inch: 2.53GHz i5 am I going to see a significant change in speed of rendering and encoding video? How much does RAM play into the equation? Also, is the i7 that much faster than the i5?

Thanks for any help. Just want to make sure before I invest the money.

Video editing can put a lot of demand on your computer so you will see a performance boost if you upgrade. How much speed increase I can't say for sure. If you want to see how much RAM plays into your video editing then open up Activity Monitor and see how much RAM is being used when you do your work. If you have a lot of Page Outs and Swaps then you are running out of RAM and you should get more.

You might want to read MacWorld's review of the new MacBook Pros.
