A friend of mine has a Mac Book MA700B/A this has two USB ports.
He inadvertently plugged in something that overloaded one of the ports, he realised what he had done but by the time he managed to pull out the USB plug an overload warning flashed on the screen then disappeared, the port has not worked since. He asked me for help but I am not really all that conversant with Mac's, but assumed that there may be inbuilt overload protection which could be reset. I have had a look on this forum but all I can come up with is going to Finder>Preferences and making sure that there are checkmarks aginst external HD's etc, these are in place. The other port is working normally apart form the fact it will not recognise a Transcend Store Jet 500GB external USB hard drive, this is nothing to do with the overload we were trying to resolve this problem prior to this happening. The USB external HD is instantly recognised on PC's.

Any advice/help/assitance in resolving these two issues would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for reading this.

Try resetting the smc. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Scroll down and do the one for your model hope this helps.

OSXX Thank you for responding we have tried resetting the smc but this has not worked. Is there anything further we can try?

foxj66 On the issue of the external HD not being recognised, the external HD was specifically bought to back up data from the Mac Book, the issue has been raised with Trancend but they have not bothered to respond! It was supposedly just plug in and use, when you mention how it was formatted I take it you mean NFTS or Fat?
