That TV example is not accurate as most modern TVs do not completely power down, but rather go into a standby mode. It's still drawing a small trickle, commonly known as vampire energy. Some TVs give you the option to change it so that it completely powers down when you turn it off. The trade off is that it takes a bit longer to turn on.

He is such a hypocrite, I read an article that his mansion uses 20 times the energy of the average American home. On top of that this guy flies around the country in private Jets. Not that I care about flying in private jets or having a $2000 electric bill, Just practice what you preach.
