The ones with a 9400m and a 9600gt - do they switch to the more powerful graphics automatically when you fire up something intensive, or do you have to open up a menu and do it?

thanks!

You have to do it manually. The quickest way I've found to do it is to click on your power icon in the top right and then go to Energy Saver Preferences. It will take you direct to the option in your System's Preferences.

The change will require you to log out and then back in. That's really only a problem if you have applications opened because it will close them all like when you do a restart. This is one of the benefits of the newer notebooks. You don't have to logout and it also has auto switching.
