Connecting Macbook to Tv via DVI- VGA

Hi. I am trying to connect my Macbook to a thomson normal tv by the use of an apple mini dvi to vga adaptor. I have plugged everything in, but still nothing on the tv screen. I am changing between the AV1 2 3 etc etc but nothing new.. for every channel change i am also "detecting display" but nothing seems to work to get it up. Please help me!

Connecting your Mac to your TV

It is not possible to provide the appropriate support without the information requested there.

In addition, if you already have adapters/cables you're attempting to use, you'll need to provide which ones you are using.
