    I would appreciate some assistance ...
    I've plugged in an external keyboard into my Macbook Pro, and if I wan't to type a <, it always becomes a instead. What could be wrong?

    check the keyboard layout
    make sure you have it set as an standard english keyboard;
    besides language, there are other options such as for the disabled i think;
    just make sure its set as standard english;

    Does the corresponding key on the external keyboard match the key on your laptop?

    I have a windows keyboard plugged into mine, and the @ and " are switched, amongst others.
