Hey i am getting myself a 12" powerbook. I am dead keen on the 12" so there is no question about size. The thing is i don't know which one to go for the combo or the super model. Some suggestions from people with both models would be great!

the only question is... ARE you going to need to burn DVD's. if so go for the super if not then dont waste the money.

i have the combo. i don't need to burn dvd's, and if i do i could always pick and external one up for under a $100.

yeah the real question is "are you going to need to burn DVDs while on the go"? If so then get the super, elsewise get the combo.

If money is no object, or you need to burn DVD's on the go, I'd say get it.
I got it with my 12" PB, and I use it all the time when I go to visit family, I record DV tape of family trips, edit with iMovie, burn with iDVD, and pass out to family members. I also use it periodically for backups when I'm away. I bought my iMac 17" w/SD for the purpose of DV editing/burning and when I got the PB I decided to get the same drive for portability of the same tasks.

If you don't see yourself burning DVD's, I wouldn't bother. You could spend less on the LaCie Dual Layer burner with LightScribe. It's a slick drive, "burn" the label right on the disc surface. It's in greyscale but it's pretty slick, no more label printing. I like it. Now I just need the DVD LightScribe media, the only thing I've found so far on the store shelves is the CD-R media, it was about $20 for a 30-pack a few months ago at Best Buy.

The superdrive is something that is very convienient. If you ever need to back up your files, having a 4.7gb disc is much nicer than a 700mb disc. I definately think it is worth 200.00 to have the superdrive option.

I opted not to get the Super drive because I rarely need to burn CD/DVDs on the road. I recently bought a LG GSA-4163B drive for my PC for less than $50USD and it's much faster, supports more formats than the Super drive, and is much cheaper!

I love having the internal superdrive. It is necessary for me to be able to burn DVDs. I do graphics, video, and music editing, and those fill up even DVDs rather quickly. With a DVD burner, you could take your whole music library of CDs, and burn them all to one DVD, or maybe 2 if your a music fanatic like me. And, as you are getting the 12" model, I think that portability is probably a big thing for you. Having an internal drive is much better for travelling than having to have an external one. I use this as a general rule of thumb "Buy the best that you can afford."

I would definitely get the superdrive. You will probably eventually want to burn dvds but more importantly if you plan to ever sell this the super drive will add a whole lot to the end price of the powerbook. Go for it.

i didn't think i would use the superdrive but i bought it anyways as I don't want to be left behind (technology-wise for media). Although since I got it, I have been burning DVDs and I wonder why I thought I didn't want it in the first place. 4.7gb is useful!

thanks everyone for the reply's well i am now typing this on my very own
powerbook 12" WITH superdrive, thanx again for the feedback in the
end i decided that i could definity use with the extra hdd space and
i do use a dvd burner occasionally so i got it!
