pretty sure its over heating. It can be used for about half an hour to an hour with g4fanconrol . with out g4fanconrol i would say about 10-20 minutes. any graphics intensive stuff seems to freeze it quicker.
I set g4fanconrol so the fan stays on. when it freezes the screen locks up and the audio hick-ups . I found some stuff about re-soldering or baking the logicboard (below). I dont think they are fixing the same problem. any ideas? If the fans are working you'll hear them spin up on start up.
This is most likely a logic board issue (I've come across it before). The soldering fix is very good indeed. Worth doing for sure. Download Temperature Monitor and run it for a while to see what temps you are running, and then report back. I installed Leopard onto a Powerbook G4 and copied the disk image to the iBook G4 hard drive and use G4FanControl to keep it running. The fan works perfectly, in fact I put in a new one because the old one sounded broken. It must be overheating, but, the tolerance has been greatly reduced. If I go over 40 degrees (sensor 1) it will freeze and I have to reboot. In the past it would get much hotter than that and the fans still wouldn't come on. It seems like a serious hardware issue. I suspect the graphics chips but really don't know. Please help! |
