I want to upgrade the HD in my macbook2.1 the 75 GB hd is too small for what I want to do. Is it possible for me to replace the HD directly with a compatible drive I have purchased with more capacity?

Yep. It's possible. If you are even remotely handy with a screwdriver. The OWC site has a video demonstrating the procedure MacBook Memory (Medium Quality) Installation Video at OtherWorldComputing.com. I think I gave you the link to the right video. If I didn't there are videos for most Mac models on the site.
