sound problem (thrown me)

Mac Specs: Processor 2.1ghz intel core 2 Duo

ive plugged my lead into my headphone socket on my macbook then into my mixer using phono plugs as usual.
weird thing is ive got no base coming out of speakers and it sounds like there a short.

when i plug the macbook charger in it all works fine

does this sound like an earth problem??
