On a new macbook pro, what does the little round button with green lights by the headphone jack do? Flame away.

Mac Specs: Unibody MacBook Pro 2.26, 4gb RAM, 500gb HD

Jaygray is offline
It's a battery indicator. The number of lights that light up shows the amount of charge remaining. Mainly useful to check the battery's charge while the machine is not running.
