Stuck at Starting Mac OSX

I just got a used macbook with OSX 10.4.11 on it. I was trying to enable the root account and played with some setting in the Net Info Manager under users/root. Now it hangs up on the Starting Mac OSX screen. Any idea how to fix this problem.
