I am going to be getting a brand new MacBook Pro 13" tomorrow. I'm really excited, it's going to be a huge upgrade from my Gateway Vista craptop. I have a question. I recently installed a 7200rpm hard drive in my mac mini. Since I won't be using it too much anymore, would it be worth it for me to move that hard drive into my new macbook? I am not concerned about the actual install, just what its effects will be on my laptop. Battery life (short-term and long-term), especially because it's supposedly not user-replaceable. Excessive noise? Anyone with similar experience I would love to hear what you think. Is it worth it?

The fact that it would void the warranty of a brand-spanking new MBP? IMHO, that right there is reason why it's not worth it. I would definitely leave that drive in the Mini and wait until the warranty is out on the MBP before doing any major changes to it. Unless, you are completely comfortable that nothing will go wrong, then go for it!

I'm not sure how much it will affect your battery life, obviously it will a little bit though since it runs faster. I noticed an increase in boot up times with a 7200 compared to that of a 5400 drive.

Swapping out the hard drive does not void your warranty. Of course any damage you incur to the machine by swapping out the hard drive will not be covered under your warranty or Apple care.

My 7200 RPM WD drive has not decreased the battery life on my MacBook nor does it run any louder or warmer than the stock Hitachi 5400 RPM drive that came with the machine.

As for increased boot times when swapping out drives, that can be avoided by doing a clean install to the new drive and using your Time Machine backup to restore. You might also try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.

Regards.

chscag is correct, it does not void the warranty. Here is a PDF of the 13" Macbook Pro user guide. It clearly indicates on chapter 3 details on how to upgrade the hard drive and memory.

I replaced my hard drive with a 7200RPM one and it's been a fantastic upgrade. Noticeable increase in speed and no practical effect on my battery life or heat. I would definitely recommend the upgrade.

Thanks Kash... That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I thought that since it was designed to be "user-replaceable" unlike my mini it should not void the warranty. Thanks again.

yea use the mini as a file server to save the extra files/music and video. If you need quick access to them use a program called SimplifyMedia, its a music/picture sharing software which is free. You can access the files off that persons computer but you cant, add/remove/delete/copy those files. So there is no violation to piracy. I use it alot and a few of my friends do.

But wait til you can get a nice 7200rpm drive for cheap then upgrade then.
