Hi

New to the forums. I'm new to opening a mac but am comfortable with playing around with PCs. However, now that I've ventured to mac, my 1st experience of opening up my macbook & it's has gone wrong. I've just installed Snow Leopard (which is working fine) but since my overheating problems continued, I decided to have a stab at replacing the thermal paste on the processor. Now the screen is black and isn't showing up at all. Your help is very much needed and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well that was probably a bad idea to start with (replacing the thermal paste)!!!

Since this is your 1st post here at Mac-Forums...we have no previous thread to evaluate your "overheating problem". Many people ask about this "problem"...only to find out that the amount of heat their MacBook was generating was normal.

Most likely your MacBook was acting normally...which would have made replacing the thermal paste unnecessary.

If it ain't broke...don't fix it!

All I can say is:

- are you 100% sure you put everything back together properly?
- are you 100% sure you didn't damage anything in this process?
- did you ground yourself before disassembly/reassembly?
- did you use too much thermal paste?

It needed to be done. It was scalding. I'm sure I've put everything back together properly.

I only removed the heatsink & fan & the 3 connectors associated with them and replaced them directly.

I took due care in diassembling it & reassembling it.

I ground myself throughout the whole process.

I only put minimal paste, enough to cover the processor chip.

Please help. I'm worried that the logic board is screwed & I'll have to get it replaced.

Does it make any noises when you turn it on?

Yeah it does. It switches on as normal but the screen doesn't come on. It's totally blank (black).

Sounds like the ribbon connecting the screen to the logic board got disconnected or perhaps you either forgot to reinsert it or didn't reinsert it properly.
