MacBook Pro - DL DVD help

I want to use some software from a friend but it requires that my Macbook pro has the capability to read double layer DVD's He tells me that some Macbooks cant read DL DVD's is there anyway of finding out before he goes through the trouble of sending it to me. (macbook pro running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger)
