I have a late 2006 Macbook. It's always tended to run a bit hot, but lately it's gotten very bad. While web browsing and text editing the temp stays at 180° F or more. The fan has gotten very loud and is constantly running at 6000+ RPM. I almost never heard the fan when the computer was new, but now it's almost always running and is very loud.

These symptoms occur even while the computer sits on a desk in front of a swamp cooler. In the last few days it's shut down without warning several times.

Having done some searches here it looks like this sort of thing happens sometimes, but out of the blue after having the computer for so long, it seems to be a cause for concern.

What should I do?

There is most likely a blockage of airflow into and out of your laptop. This can happen if you're exposed to a large amount of dust/pet dander/etc. The solution would to be open the laptop up and blow it out. If you aren't technically savvy i would suggest bringing it to the local apple store or a apple certified technician.

Follow the advice you were given about cleaning the inside of the machine and around the exhaust vents. And... move it away from that swamp cooler!

Swamp coolers operate by condensing water on coils or pads and create a pretty good intake of air. The extra humidity and movement of air near the computer will cause dust and dirt particles to stick and possibly be drawn into it.

Regards.

I did as suggested. Although there was very little dust in the computer, it did seem to help for a few days, but now the problem is back, and is even worse.

Any other ideas?

mine does the same thing, i use SMC Fan Control. its a free app. and there are ways to edit the AppleBlower and Applefan config files to cool down the computer. Research How to cool your macbook and you will find a ton of tutorials.

Mine runs at 112 degrees now vs the 160+ before the file edit. with SMC using the fan at 6200RPM's all the time.
