For some reason my macbook keeps waking itself whist in sleep mode. Usually I close the lid to put it into sleep mode but this more often than not causes it to wake from sleep whilst the lid is shut. Then after about 30s to 1min it realises it's meant to be in sleep mode and then goes back to sleep.

This seems to be more of a problem when the lid is closed rather than forcing sleep through the Apple menu icon.

I usually have a couple of USB devices (2 hdds attached from which I store my working files) whilst in sleep mode and an iPod. I know that previously leaving the iPod connected via dock causes the macbook to get stuck in a sleep-wake loop. Not sure if the connected hdds are causing this or if it's something else like the OS or hardware?

Any one got any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks

Mice and keyboards can wake a Mac from sleep, as can Bluetooth devices if you have the option enabled (turned on by default).

I've found that although I'm not using the mouse, a little bit of vibration on my desk can cause the machine to wake up - regardless of whether it's USB or Bluetooth.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

Yeah I've noticed that too with the mice, but even when I disconnect my mouse and keyboard the same thing seems to be happening.
The weird thing is it seems to do it more often - this sleep/wake looping cycling - when the lid is closed.

It's only recently started happening—I think since I upgraded my hdd and put Snow Leopard on it. Not sure if the two are connected?

You probably have already done this, but go in and recheck your Energy Saver settings also. Seemed my wife's MB was doing the same thing for several months.

When I finally got tired of listening to the slot drive spin up from across the room in the early morning with no one around it, found that she had set the monitor to sleep, but she had the computer sleep set to 'Never' when on power adapter.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

This happened to me sometimes. I just started to unplug my usb devices, and turn off my bluetooth mouse...problem solved! Never happened again for me.
Also look at what bobtomay said!
