Took my macbook 13 inch back into apple store today due to black mark on screen. New it was a thunder fly as i had watched it crawl over the screen a month or so ago and die in the middle (where else). Had waited a month or so before taking it in but machine still within warranty.

Genius expert identified straight away although did say they only have 2 similar each year.

Genius commented that screen is sealed unit and nothing should get in. New lid/ screen ordered at no charge, at least I will get another years warranty on the repair and get through the thunder fly season next season.

The year after that my mac book will be tucked away wrapped in cling film for the months of july and august.

Cambridge, UK.

I have heard them called corn flies but "thunder flies" sound so much more dramatic.

I have seen them get in between the glass and a photo in a frame.

Must add that apple store staff were great, what else would you expect!

Thanks for the "Thunder Fly" info. Yes it definitely sounds like the Apple folks did a great job...and didn't try to hassle you about it!
