Hello all. I'm new to this site and I was hoping for some advice on this issue. I have a first generation Macbook Pro 15' (model A1150). My internal DVD burner/drive appears to be broken. I cannot get it to finish a simple audio CD burn in iTunes. Whenever I try, it appears to go through the burn process as usual, by showing that it's initializing and finalizing the CD. Then the disc ejects and I get a message that says: The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.

Has anyone else had this issue? More importantly- what are my options? Can I replace this drive? My laptop is a few years old so I doubt Apple will cover it under warranty.

Thanks in advance!

Firstly I would try cleaning the drive with a disc cleaner, as many people don't and lasers do get dirty.
If that fails then your options are to replace the drive, possible, but a little fiddly, or buy an external burner (cheaper and you get to use it on other Macs/PC's should the need arise).
These things do wear out eventually.

Thanks. Is there a particular drive cleaner you recommend?

Not especially, but I have used Allsop products for years with no issues.

Compressed air is ok, but it doesn't clean the lens and may blow dust further into the machine in my opinion.

Did you just install Snow Leopard? I am having the same issue with DVD burning and after research it seems like others have had the same issue. I am also experiencing issues with my fan, it is currently constantly running at 6200rpm and I have not been able to make it stop. Does anybody have any fixes minus just reinstalling 10.5?

I don't have Snow Leopard yet. I'm running 10.5.8. Are you getting the same error message as me?
