HI,

does anyone know if a macbook 1.83ghz reads 3gb of ram?

It depends which 1.83ghz MacBook model you have. There were two different models, and I can't tell which model you have with the limited information provided.

I purchased an older model MBP late 2006 it has upgraded HD to 500gig original was 120gig with 1 g ddr2 ram.I got it with 2 g ram and went out a bought 2 -2gig sticks and it recognised all 4 gig

It may recognize all 4Gigs, but it may not use all 4. My late 2006 blackbook knows it has 4 Gigs but in activity monitor it only sees and uses 3.

Yep. I have that same '06 MBP as ragu, but with the 2.33 Ghz. Have 4 GB in mine also. They recognize it, but that generation can only use 3 GB of it.
