Yes, I'm one of those idiots that leaves their macbook on the roof of their car and goes zipping down the highway >_< Needless to say, my macbook ended up being run over by one or more cars. Craziest thing is, it still works perfectly. As far as I can see, the only thing that is really damaged is the case. The most damaged looking place is where the power cord plugs in, and even it works, so it seems that everything is fine, maybe a few of the inputs and outputs may need replacing, but really it's just the outer shell. How amazing are Macs? Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what is the best course of action. I read some things about people buying cases off ebay, and have had some people saying it costs upwards of 500 and others saying it costs 10 bucks. I have also talked to people about getting it fixed, but am weary of anyone who is not actually working for Apple, as I do not want them to steal parts from my mac and replace it with low quality parts for their own profit. Then again, Apple is insanely expensive, and as far as I can see, there is no real time frame on when I will get my mac back, and I want it fixed ASAP. I feel naked without it. I also wonder how much computer knowledge you would need to change the case yourself. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

As much as it's great that it works, if I were you, I would bring it in, explain what happened and have someone at Apple look at it.

I would not suggest replacing the case unless you are really good with Macs (and I mean really really good). If something is damaged, and I would find it hard to believe that nothing is, it should get fixed as soon as possible to avoid making the damage worse.

I agree with everything he said. Keep in mind that replacing parts like the case are extremely expensive. For example, I was quoted $250CDN for my MacBook for the upper case (the piece with the keyboard and trackpad). Luckily I got that replaced for free.

Yes, after much research i'm definatly going that route. My local mac retailer quoted, for an entire shell replacement (which includes the screen even though the screen is fine, he said it comes as one piece so it has to be included) would be 800 to 900 canadian. does that seem like a reasonable price?

Not when you can get a brand new one for $1300 that has a warranty.

agreed, it's kind of dumb to get it repaired at this point. If they really want that much money you might as well save it, and continue to use your current mac until it either stops working or you don't want it anymore, and then replace it with a brand new one. If you can hold out until early to mid next year, there will most likely be a refresh, so you can get a brand new one then.

I doubt apple would ever advertise that a notebook could be run over and still work. There is no way that they could gaurantee that it would still work every time, or even the majority of the time. If they advertised that they would likely be replacing a lot of MBP's for free.

How did you get it replaced for free? I have a small dent on the back, where the ram is.

Does Applecare cover the aluminum cover?

I got it for free because I have the older white MacBook which are prone to cracking the plastic when you close the lid a bit harder than usual. Anyone who has cracked that part of their white (maybe even black) MacBook gets it replaced by free from Apple since they acknowledge that as a design flaw or something like that.

As for the aluminum ones, I'm pretty sure AppleCare doesn't cover any outside physical damage because I asked the same question about my white one and I was told that AppleCare would not cover any damage that I caused.
