I have a 13" white macbook around 6 months old and no matter what cd/dvd i put in the drive if fails to boot from it, i have tried holding down the relevant keys C/Option but it just fails to boot from anything even getting it to boot from the apple discs is problematic to say the least .

At the moment i am trying to boot from the Drive Genius DVD and all i get is a grey screen then a black screen on a continual loop it seems.

What could be wrong with the drive?

Thanks in advance

Possibly a dirty lens in the drive or the drive may be defective. But since the machine is still under warranty, I wouldn't fool with it. Give Apple a call and make an appointment with them to look at it.

Regards.
