I have black CD-R discs and my macbook pro that i purchased a year ago would not burn my itunes music onto that. In fact it doesn't even read the blank disc. I am able to rip music from CDs into my comp and programs but not the other way around. anybody knows what the issue could be? is there a hardware error with the drive or....

It could be but it could also be the discs themselves. Cheap brands tend to be much more problematic. What discs are you using? Can you burn data CDs using a burn folder (Finder > File > New Burn Folder)?

i can use those CDs on another MacBook pro just fine and they work fine on pretty much every other computer in the household, so im assuming it is the drive but wasn't sure if it is a know issue.

I have to say I bought two spindles of black Memorex CD-Rs, and all of them do the same thing in my MacBook - stay on for about 30 seconds with no prompt and then eject. Silver CD-R work fine, and the black ones work fine in a PC.

Drive's are fickle things. I can use certain discs on my iMac and not on the Powerbook. It's all down to the make of drive sometimes, and Apple rarely use the same ones in each machine.
That said, I would point at the discs first too.
Try cleaning your Macbook's drive with a disc cleaner.
