MacBook Pro - DVD will not play

Today I got my first Apple computer, a 15" MacBook Pro. When I insert a movie DVD I hear the drive moaning after a few ticking sounds and then after some more moaning and spinning, it spits the DVD out. Coming from the PC world I expected it to play the movie when I insert the DVD but that is not happening. Is this normal behavior for the MacBook Pro? Am I doing something wrong? Is it an official DVD or one you've burned? If it's the latter it could just be that the Macbook doesn't like the media. Try a different disc, a shop bought film for example.
