I have lost sound on my macbook pro. The headphone jack is lit red. When I press my volume keys it shows the volume all the way up and a "no" sign is there. In my system preferences the output tab lists "Digital Out" under name and "Built-in Output" under Type. When I insert headphones there is still no sound but this tab does change to "Headphones" under name.

"Built-In Speakers" are no longer listed....

I have searched for an answer and none of the fixes are working...including rebooting.

Can anyone help???

This is a known problem - the interior jack pin is probably bent and is stuck open in the "digital mode". The resolution is given is this thread. Be careful when applying....

It may be bent so much that no manner of jiggling or moving will bring it back to normal. You may have to take the machine on in and have it repaired. In order to get at the inside of that jack I believe part of the case and keyboard have to be removed. The jack itself will probably have to be replaced.

Try booting from an external drive, if still no sound its a hardware issue. If hardware, the problem usually relates to the Left I/O board, this contains the magsafe connector, audio and USB ports. It sits under the airport card, left speaker and card cage. its not an expensive board.
