Mine seems to have dropped dead ! I insert and it plays around and ejects >


I would imagine its dead ?????

is fitting a new unit a DIY job or something evil ?

It really depends upon your technical competency.

If you Google it and also have a squint on YouTube, you'll find quite a lot of information about it.

Were it me, I'd have no hesitation about doing it as there is some great reference material available out there. I think the most difficult bit is making sure you have the correct screwdrivers as one or two are Torx (I believe the G4 is similar to the MBP in this respect).

Anyway, have a look.

tried cleaning but this failed.

unit just spits disc out within a few seconds after a couple of noises.

I didn't think it would really do it, but it would have been a real bummer if you'd replaced the drive just because the laser was dirty.

The iFixit website is probably the next stop then.

picked up the correct drive for £20.00 at a computer fair here in London. will follow "ifixit" later

If memory serves, you'll need a Torx 8 to open the case and remove the hard drive; and a Torx 6 to remove the inverter board and modem from the optical drive. No other special tools required.
