Question MacBook - MacBook keeps going to sleep on startup, no backlight

I have a black macbook (CoreDuo 2.0ghz, 1gb) - when I turned it on this morning i noticed the backlight wasn't working - it booted to the login screen and then went to sleep. I can wake it up, but it only stays awake for a few seconds. I have tired refreshing the PRAM and the SMC - but that did not help. I ran the Apple Hardware Test, which did load without going to sleep, however the backlight did not work. It did not find any problems. I've tried reinstalling MacOS X - which the first disc loaded fine - and the backlight DID work. However, when it restarted to insert disc 2, the backlight went off, and it is now going to sleep after only a second or two so the installation can't complete.

Any Ideas???

Is your machine still under warranty or Apple care? The symptoms you describe may be logic board related and probably should be checked out by an authorized Apple service facility.

Regards.

I was thinking a logic board issue as well - but thought i was weird that the backlight worked and that it didn't go to sleep when booting from the install CD. .. does that make sense?

thanks!

Looks like it lasted a bit longer when booted from the install DVD, but as you said above it actually got a bit worse. Still looks like a logic board to me so if you are under warranty, get it checked out.

Regards.

I just recently had this problem. The screen would come on and I would hear the chime but then the blacklight went off. I could faintly see the login screen but could not do anything.

Took it to Apple and I just got it back today. They replaced the logic board, display, and inverter board. Only the inverter board was supposed to be replaced because they thought that was the problem but I guess the other stuff too was messing up. I have Apple Care. Your best bet is to take it in.
