Hello, And Sorry For Caps Lock.

Several Weeks Ago, Just A Couple Drops Of Beer Got Knocked Onto The Top Left Corner Of The Keyboard Of My Aluminum Macbook Pro By My Cat. Unfortunately I Was Asleep And The Computer Ran For About 12 Hours Before I Even Realized What Had Happened. I Let It Dry For Several Days But It Appears The Damage Is Done.

The Symptoms Are Very Wierd. The Esc, Tilde, And Tab Keys Flat Out Don't Work. Certain Other Keys Only Work Reliably With Caps Lock Enabled (1, A, Z, And Oddly, The Delete Key)

Can Anyone Explain Why Caps Lock Makes These Keys Work 100% When They Are Almost Unworkable Without It (they Just Spit Out Random Letters And Symbols Or Dont Work)

Also, Why Is My Delete Key On The Fritz Without Caps Lock, When It Is One Of The Furthest Keys From The Spill Site?

My Final Question: Based On What I Have Described, What Components Are Damaged And How Much Will It Be To Fix Them?

Not Having The Esc And Tab Keys Is Ruining My Life. Most Games And Software Need These Keys For Critical Functions That Cannot Be Bound To Another Key. I Hate The Idea Of Spending Hundreds Of Dollars Just To Fix 6-8 Affected Keys When The Computer Is Fully Functional Otherwise. Someone Please Give Me Some Good News.

Side Note: The Beer Cans Were On A Different Table. My Cat Must Have Bowled Them Over So Hard That Beer Was Flung Over A Foot Directly Onto My Escape Key.

Fml.

EDIT: THANK GOD, THE FORUM AUTOMATICALLY UN-CAPS WHOLE POSTS TYPED IN CAPS LOCK.

Liquid causes shorts in circuits, depending on the complexity of the circuit, the effect can often be unintuitive.

Probably just the keyboard itself. You can check for parts and instructions at ifixit.com. If the machine is under warranty, you will probably want to pay for the repair from an Apple authorized repair center to maintain that warranty. I would imagine that you're looking at less than $200 if the damage is confined to the keyboard.

HELP! I just spilled a tiny bit of cereal and milk onto my Macbook keyboard and now none of the keys are working, not even the ones that weren't spilled on. The trackpad is working, as are all of the functions of the laptop except the keyboard. Does anyone have any idea how expensive it is to get a keyboard replaced? Or if there is a bigger problem? If I try to let the keyboard dry out, might this help at all?

Okay so I am currently in a nasty situation
I spilt water on my MacBook pro while it was closed and off
I wiped off the water not thinking to much of it and put it in a dry place
the following morning when I turned it on it boots up but then turns off after five seconds
so I take it to my local apple store
this is where it gets interesting
the sensors detecting moisture had not been tripped, they could not tell there had been any water damage and they tell me warranty might cover this
so they send it to apple to really get in there and check it out
apple gets back to me and says the logic board is corroded
what?! that's a $1200 dollar repair no warranty will cover that
and they say it looked like it had been corroding for a while
now I have never spilt anything on this computer before and it is only several months old practically brand new
is it just me or does something seem fishy about this
I know apple wouldn't try and play me for a fool but how is that the logic board is corroded when I spilled water on it while it was closed and turned off only one time not even a week ago
I'm just wondering if anyone had any input on this situation

Unfortunately, that's what liquids do to metals - it doesn't take long for corrosion to form. And of course, since the warranty only covers manufacturer's defects and not accidental damage, your only option is to have it repaired by Apple or an Apple authorized serviced center if you want to maintain it.

I feel the kind of liquid makes a big difference. Soda for example is highly caustic, and likely to ruin components even if you dry it quickly. Sugared coffee would be hazardous too. It's a terrible thing to spill water on your laptop, but if you act quickly you might be able to save it.

No one mentioned the possibility that this was coincidental, and that the logic board had been corroded or about to fail, unrelated to the small water spill. I'm not saying that's the case; but it's possible. The liquid sensors weren't tripped, for one thing. It seems to me that aluminum case is pretty integral; it's possible the spill you described, since you wiped it up right away, did nothing to the logic board. I would say nothing about your spill, and try your best to get Apple to replace the logic board. If you're within the warranty period, the logic board is covered by warranty.

So hey good news
I called customer relations at apple and I nicely asked the lady on the other line to send me pictures of the corroded logic board for proof. She told me she could probably get the price of the repair reduced. After holding for several minutes she got back to me and told me she wanted me to be a long time apple customer and that the repair would be free of charge. Hallelujah! Of course it helped that she knew I am a student, this is my first macbook, and I bought it a few months ago.
Moral of the story, it never hurts to call and talk to a human being

I am just sick. my daughter knocked over a can of ginseng tea onto her macbook (she says it's a new generation). I was watching and she retrieved it very quickly and so I think not a lot got on it. It was in the upper left corner. She wiped it off. It was still on but not plugged in. I'm pretty sure she did not shut it off and definitely did not take the battery out. I left and when I came back she had put it in some rice. It didn't come up around the sides but the bottom of the laptop sat on it. She said when she had lifted it up some water was around the battery door area. I don't know if this was excess on the island or if through her computer. Anway, she took it to the Apple store. Last night (Wednesday) the guy called and said that it showed there had been water damage. he said the logic board was shot and of course warranty wasn't going to cover it. My daughter has ALL of her homework on it. She's a high school senior and is taking a college writing class so EVERYTHING she's written in the last 9 months is on it. No, she didn't have anything backed up. That was evidently a new concept to her ??! She's after all only a high school student, how should she know about that (she says). ANYWAY, I asked the guy if he could get stuff off the hard drive and he said he wasn't able to get it to do anything with the unit he was trying but he would try another one and maybe that would make it work. He said there was a residue inside, a film. I'm pretty sure it had been closed up for 48 hours. She said she's NEVER spilled anything on it before. From all these other posts, it doesn't sound like anybody had lost their hard drive. Oh yeah, the screen had gotten funny and then shut off. but later when she turned it back on, it came on and then the screen went funny again. Sorry for the novel. I just don't want to leave anything out. Any ideas? Why does it sound like it is 110% dead? I guess I'll just go and pick it up at the Apple store. and the really sick part is it's not paid off. Got $500 to go. Thanks for any help!!

Sorry to hear that. Fortunately, the hard drive is probably fine. It can be removed by any competent computer tech (even a novice with the right tools), connected with an adapter to another Mac and the data can be transferred.

If you don't want to have it repaired by Apple, it can be done for less by other Apple-authorized repair centers (Techrestore.com, Macservice.com, etc.).

Thanks for the reply. I went to the store and we were able to retrieve the stuff from the hard drive. He had to shut off a couple of times because it wasn't responding or something. I don't know if that means the hard drive isn't that good??? Anyway, we got the important stuff. I think I will check and see if somebody else can repair it. Just need to check on a logic board. Thanks!!!

The hard drive is fine if he was able to access it at all. The freezing is probably symptomatic of the damaged logic board.
