Hey folks, serious problem here, would appreciate any help!

My MBP had been running a bit slow so I decided to restart it. Before it restarted it stalled so I had to hold the power button until it turned off. Now when I turn it on I get a message saying you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button.

I've tried everything I that apple support says but no luck this message just keeps coming up. Its the last gen of MBP and I can't find any of the discs that came with it.

Any help would be great!

It sounds as if you are experiencing a kernel panic during startup. I would recommend you try booting into safe mode by following the instructions there (if you want some more info on what to expect with safe mode, check here). Once booted, run disk utility to verify the disk and permissions (repairing either/both if need be). Try that and reboot into normal mode to see if it will work.

Not sure if this will be of any use but have you tried pressing the power button to switch it on and then holding Command + Option + P + R until you here the startup sound for the 2nd time?

This is going to be a very hard problem to solve if you can't boot at all (safe mode or normal mode) and you have no discs. Can you borrow some discs from someone else?

Hey all, I have the same problem with my MacBook... I've tried booting into safe mode, and also tried bad.heron's suggestion but I still get the same screen as descibed in the OP's post.

I have the discs that came with the mac, does it look like I'm going to have to reinstall OSX?

Sounds like you will have to reinstall OS X or take it in to a Apple store to get it looked at?

You can do a Archive and Install which will import your user accounts and home folders but if you have your data backed up do a clean installation.

You can use the Leopard disc to verify and repair your disk if needed. Boot up the disc and open disk utility from the menu.
