this isnt the first time i seen a thread talk about how their room mates screwed them. its so hard to find good roommates anymore. you think no its cool we hang out but they jack you anyway. this happens alot with playstation 3 for some reason too. oh my roommates had a bunch of people over while i was at work and now my playstation 3 is gone. i guess people would rather believe that then their own roommate screwing them over.

For starters, you should call the police and file a police report immediately; and you should also get the names of every single person or "friend" your roommate had over.

I'm curious to know how your roommate is handling this. Is he/she concerned at all or investigating?

One of my friends apartment was broken into and one of the things stolen was his macbook. He asked me the same question, so I looked into it. Unfortunately, the only way to track it after it is stolen is if you had already put the software on mac. Sorry.

Little hint:

Go to www.logmein.com and sign up for a free account. You can monitor whether your MacBook (or other computer) is online, and if it's online, you can click on the computer and actually take it over...so...if your MacBook gets stolen and you can do that, what you do is zap a picture of the thief with the iSight.

Didn't something similar happen and the thief was nabbed thanks to Back To My Mac???

Yes, there are some other companies that offer this kind of insurance. You should check with your homeowners/renters insurance first, if you have that. You may already be covered.

I opened an ad free, 100% free site today, it's in early beta stage, but what it does is once you sign up, you set the provided url as your homepage, once you open your browser it records the IP address, then forwards to your desired homepage within a second. So, if the laptop ever gets stolen you can log in, see the IP and report it.

Where is my macBook?

would alerting apple help at all?

just thinking that if the person has no use for it but decides to sell it and the person that buys it or even a dumb thief tries to register with apple for either service or just to have it on their list of owned apple products maybe they have a way of alerting you that it was registered and either alert you or the police?

i only think this might be something to try because i have purchased a used macbook before and i always register it at apple.com

of course i guess this would only work if you happen to have the serial or have previously registered it.

hope that helps and i am sorry for your loss.

Notebook computers are easily stolen - whether it's an Apple MacBook Pro or Sony Vaio, it doesn't matter. The best way to safeguard it is never let it out of your sight! But of course that's not practical. That's why insurance and other protective measures are needed.

And don't depend on your homeowner's insurance. Not all homeowner's policies will cover the full replaceable cost. Some policies require that those types of high value items have to be separately scheduled. Otherwise, your deductible kicks in.

Here are some ways to protect your investment:

Laptop, Desktop, Tablet PC and PDA/Smartphone insurance from Safeware Insurance Agency, Inc.

Setting up firmware password protection in Mac OS X

There are others.
