Thank you Aptmunich for those helpful tips.

I have a problem with my powerbook G4, it will not start up at all. I tried taking the battery out, unplugging it but it still will not boot up. The battery seems fine, but everytime I plug in the powercord adapter my powerbook gets overheated in the same spot i'm plugging the powercord in at. Is there any other solutions I can try?

I have a little question to ask. Recently i bought a 2nd hand iBook VRAM32 800MHz. It was working all fine till one day refused to power up. I have done a pram and pmu reset and neither have worked. However it seems to power up randomly, when it wants to. Once up and running i can used it no problem. I have done a few test with Tech Tools Pro 4 and no problems show up. I can safely restart the machine but once powered down it doesn't want to switch back on. I am really confused as to whats wrong with it. I have tryed removing the extra ram chip in there as well as the airport. None of which seems to affect the whole issue, i.e. machine still doens't power up.

help? :biohazard

Hmmm... I can't really think of anything else - the previous owner hadn't set up automatic startup in the energy saving system preferences bychance?

ok a bit of an update on that one as it seems that i am not the only one that has problems of that sort. especially with those iBooks ... now i have serviced a few macs in my life and i knew that those models have problems with the logic board ... however i think i managed to figure out whats the cause of this 'not powering up' syndrome ... it looks like its 70% power related [no sherlock!] & 30% heat related ... mainly to do with the battery ... i have a new battery [2004] that has replaced the original one. not only that but it looks like its from a different model [its solid white color instead of slightly transparent] ... so the ibook refuses to powerup when the battery is charged up to 100% [or 99% as OS X displays it] ... once the battery goes below the 99% the ibook will powerup without a problem ... also if the laptop has worked up some heat it will refuse to power up as well .... you have to wait for it to cool down a bit ... its very weird as it even without the battery in sometimes it refuses to powerup ... so far i have managed to work up a way to manage with the weirdness ...

1. never power down the ibook with the battery in and charged to max !!! [so far it looks that this is the main culprit for the whole problem!]
2. if its hot wait for it to cool down before you powerup again.
3. after you have used the battery down to 50% take it out and use the power supply only ... it seems that way there are no problems powering back on ...

will update this as the tests are still running and i am not convinced that all of the above is absolutelly correct. as i mentioned before the faults on this notebook are more sporadic and moody then a smackhead without heroin.

hope it helps.

I think I have a problem with the display on iBook, after hot-switching user accounts, the displayed colours are a bit off.....all the colours displayed has a blue-ish tinged on it.

Any suggestions as to why it happens or how to fix it??

Thanks in advance

Go to system preferences->display and check the color settings.
Chances are, you've got a different selection there for the 2nd user that uses a slightly bluer colour calibration.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I just check both user settings has the same colour settings. Could it be the display card??

Cheers

Hmmm perhaps it's just a bug of some sort...
Are you running the latest version of OS X?

I have a similar problem going on. When I boot up it goes to the ? folder and stays there. I can't start the computer in safe mode, single user mode, or any mode for that matter. I can feel a slight humming in the computer when it boots up, and sounds like maybe the hard drive is going. Is there something I can do to be sure the hard drive is the problem since I can't boot up in single user mode, I don't have a dvd drive in my ibook or an os cd. Any ideas?

Cool

Normally when you get the question mark, the system is saying I can not find a bootable OS. It verify if your hard disk went south, you will need your install media to boot from.

It appears your problem is even more severe, since you don't have a CD/DVD drive on the system. If your system has a firewire port, then you can connect to another system using target mode. Then on the other system using disk utility you verify if your disk is okay.

I do have a cd drive, just no dvd drive in the system. Since the new os disks are dvd's, i can't really boot from a disk. I'll give the target mode a try though, thanks.

Also, if you have another mac with a DVD drive, you can pop a system dvd in the other mac, and boot from that system's dvd drive using the firewire target mode.

my ibook g4 is acting weird as heck. When I first bought it, it wouldn't charge at all. I thought aybe the battery was dead and needed to by a new one or something. Well a couple of days ago I noticed it finally started charging. Well whenever I take the power chord out the power automatically drops to about 90 or 70 from 100. Then the popup comes up telling me that I am running on battery power. Soon after the screen turns off, but the computer stays on, because i see the white light coming from the from of the computer. As soon as i plug it back in the screen comes back on right where it was before it turned off. I tried the pram thing and was wondering if you should get a confirmation or something after you do it because I am not seeing one and dont know if I did it right.

oh yeah also another thing since i got my mac used and it doesn't have an instruction manual, what is this little gray button underneath the ibook that makes a green light come on when i push it??:ninja:
