MacBook - mail app

I'm hoping to completely sync the mail app on my macbook with my gmail account.

i have my account currently set up with gmail, but my dock shows that i have 5,710 unread messages (from when i first set up gmail in 2004 up till now) and the number keep continues to grow.

i want it so my mail application looks like my gmail account, with zero unread messages, as of now, and also i have no idea how to sort my mail by most recent unread message.

any help would be appreciated!

thanks.

The reason it has so many messages is because it downloads all the messages still on the gmail server. The best way to get rid of this number is go into your inbox, select all, then mark as read. This should make the unread number disappear from your dock.

To sort the messages with the newest first, click on the date received label on the far right of your inbox. You might have to click it twice until the arrow points down, and the newest messages will appear first.

Hope this helps, I always use my gmail with Apple Mail and it's lightning fast, works great.

Cheers

Only a WAG here.... but do you by chance have all your GMail messages archived on the server from 2004? If so, they're going to show up in Apple Mail as unread when you first set it up.

See if GMail help for Apple Mail 3 offers anything that might be an answer to not having to sort thru over 5000 mail messages.

Apple Mail 3.0 - Help Center

Regards.

Thank you for the help! I am new to mac, and am still learning the ropes!

When in doubt, I should always remember to command click!

One more question about mail. How do I use the RSS feature on it? I use google reader for my RSS, but could I see that all on mail instead?

Yea mac's do take a little bit of getting used to, but once you have it down you'll really enjoy the computer. I was always a PC guy, and I've had my macbook just about a year now, and I don't ever intend to go back to PC. Especially with the intel based macs that allow me to run windows, you'll have to look into that if you need Windows for some applications, and once you're a little more comfortable with the computer I'd recommend it.

As far as RSS feeds go in mail, you'll notice in the navigation bar on the left side if has Inbox, then a few items bellow that should be RSS. Just go to File, then add RSS feed and it will be displayed there.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I agree, the more I'm learning about the macbook, the more I prefer it over my Windows.

I'm playing around with the RSS, and I don't know if I like it as much as google reader. Finding and adding links are easier with reader, it seems.

Yea I don't use RSS feeds much on my mac, usually just on my blackberry. But I've been fooling around with it the last couple minutes, and I also like Google Reader.

I think I'm really going to like the mail app once it's completely up and running.

One problem, though. For some reason, every time I hit get mail, it updates 12 at a time, and is only up to mail from August 10th.

Why wouldn't the app update my mail all at once?

I'm not really sure what it is that is happening. I've never encountered that problem, but I do know it's a good idea to take a look at preferences. In there you can how often it will refresh, and I have mine set to every minute that way it's basically instant. Try messing around with both your mac mail preferences and the preferences in gmail, not really sure if there is anything on gmail's end that might need tweaking but a good idea to check out second.
