sorry, im a noob here.

a friend of mine has a macbook (white) (1GB RAM) going to waste and i want to offer to buy it from him. it was one of the first models out and it has the following problems:

He says the Disc Drive is temperamental for burning data (not sure if its a combo or super drive)

hard drive failed and is no longer recognized
Runs very hot
no box for it.

casing is cracked at the bottom right:

any idea how much i should be looking at (considering im going to remove some thermal grease, install a new hard drive and not use the optical to burn stuff) ?

thanks guys

The hard drive can be replaced inexpensively as a do it yourself project. The combo drive is another matter.

As far as the machine running hot, how hot? Could be nothing, or it could be something serious. You just don't know. I wouldn't be too concerned about the crack in the case as long as it holds up and doesn't get worse.

Hard to say how much it's worth. Make him an offer of what you think it's worth to you and see if he'll accept.

You can get an idea of parts cost and repairs at this site. Have the exact model number on hand when you go there.

I would offer 50-100 pounds max. If you can do the work yourself, then you could fix it for cheap, most likely. The fans may be dirty and will have to be cleaned, this can cause overheating. Or a chip or portion of the board may be damaged, which could cause over heating. Hard drive, as has been said is easy, and cheap if you can do it yourself. A HDD can be had for 20-100 pounds. A can of air will cost you 5 or so pounds. A #2 phillips head screw driver and a set of Torx drivers, plus patience and th service manual (found online) for you laptop are all you need.

But the age of it alone, I would not give 300 pounds if it worked perfectly. If it really is one of the first models.
