MacBook Pro - Problems With USB Memory Devices

I have just started getting problems with USB memory sticks and my External hard drives.
My computer wont recognise them when I plug them in.
I have to restart the computer with the device already plugged in to get the computer to actually see them?
Can someone help me?

Sometimes I find I have to pull sticks out and insert them in second time to get them to mount
