What do I do, when the starting Mac OS X screen gets stuck?
Okay... So yesterday I installed the updates. I think it was Mac OS X 10.5.5.
But I was in a rush so I needed to turn off the computer. While the update install was in progress. So now the computer was turned off. And I turned it off while it was installing the updates. When I turned it on, the Mac OS X start screen just gets stuck. You know the grey background with the apple in the middle. And the little loading thing under the apple. The loading thing just keeps going, round and round and round. I have tried having it turned on, for hours. But it still keeps loading.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO!?
I NEED MY MACBOOK!

start in safe mode, hold down the option key while you start until you hear the chime

Mac is like a car, keep clean and up to date and it will give you many hours of good driving

What you're probably going to have to do is find someone with another mac, connect them, and boot yours in target disk mode. This will mount your hard drive on the other computer.
Once that is done, copy all your important files over to the other computer for safe keeping.

After that, you are going to have to reinstall your OS using the restore disks that came with your computer.

I don't know of any other way to fix it...
Anyone else have any ideas...

Can't I just reinstall it with archive?

If you have a bootable archive disk, then yes

Oherwise, as NPuter said, you will have to start up off another bootable drive or set target disk mode (T on start-up) and access / rescue your files from another mac

I just had the same problem on my iBook and was able to repair it with the start up disk. Insert the disk and push C. Click File and Disk Utility. Push Repair Disk. It's not a guarantee but worth a try before you erase your HD and re-install.

Why erase when you can archive and install first?
