MacBook - Problems connecting Macbook to TV

I bought a mini dvi to dvi cable and a dvi to HDMI cable from my local Apple store today. I connected it all up and my desktop picture appears on the tv. However, no icons appear and when I open applications or try to play video, it just stays on the desktop picture, even though the Macbook itself runs as normal.

Any ideas how I can get it working?

All sorted now after messing with the prefs, now just a case of trying to get the picture quality perfect.
