MacBook - not starting!!!

hi have a 1st gen macbook.
1.83 ghz 13" 1 gig ram

my computer will not start up after the first gong. he just stays on the gray screen.

one time when i started it up it showed a icon of a file with a question mark in the center... whats happening

The file icon with the question mark usually means a harddrive fault. If you put the OS X disk in, restart again and hold down the C key will it boot from disk?
