can you use let say the start up disk for a mac os x10.5 leopard on a mac os x to install the newer version???

Ok,

1. Leopard is the newest version of OS X
2. You can use a Leopard (10.5) install DVD to install it.
3. Other install disks will install other versions...
4. To update (eg, from 10.5.3 to 10.5.4) use Software Update in the Apple menu.

Not quite sure what you're asking but that should cover the bases.
