iBook - CW-8123 incompatible in a g3 500mhz ibook ?

I am trying to put a CDRW/DVD drive into a g3 ibook. Getting some expert opinions I clipped off the last column of pins in the connector cable so that the hard drive would set to slave. Still no sign of the DVD player in system profiler. It's a new drive, 9.2 on it, yet to put 10.2/10.3 on it yet. Anyway when I clicked Apple DVD player in profiler it said error 301 this player isn't supported !

Any thoughts ?
