I have a pro w the latest leopard edition. i have an .avi file downloaded from azereus or vuze and when i play it back in quicktime the video plays without sound. ive downloaded the divX plugin quicktime suggests i get but it still doesn't work. i downloaded perian and double click the .avi file but still no audio. help!

You should look into a better player for AVI files. I like to use these...

MPlayer
or
VLC

thanks will try them now, the audio type for the file is AC3, perian is supposed to play it but doesn't, maybe im using perian wrong? thought i just opened the perian.pref let it update and open the file

MPlayer and VLC will play AC3 files without issue.

Keep in mind, the "official" Mac OS X port of MPlayer hasn't been updated in forever. I suggest downloading an SVN build from here: www.haque.net/software/mplayer/mplayerosx/builds/

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.
