MacBook Pro - Slow down after waking up from sleep?

I notice many times that if i have my mbp closed for a while then i open it up and start doing stuff again, i get a lot of slowdown.. this is especially evident if MS excel is open..

does anyone else have this problem or know any steps i can take to fix it?
