Okay I have been doing a lot of research and had previously purchased a white macbook and after a few days returned it only because I was in midst of my semester and didn't wanna switch and had no use for it at that particular moment. However, with summer approaching I am anxious to purchase a new MacBook. I should be waiting for the update (June-August?) but I am a little impatient and love the look and features of the current MB so I don't think I will be too disappointed with an update (definitely love the look and dont want it to change and not crazy for multi-pad, etc).
Anyways I have a few concerns about the White MacBook. Personally, I love love love it. I think it has the ooooooh Mac "cool factor" (I know, I know...I'm a girl what can I do? ) but I was totally turned off by the yellow discoloring on the palmrest/clicker. Many fellow uni students have the WhiteBook and I have seen some gross discoloration. Is this still a concern with the new generation of White MacBooks?Just loooking at the BlackBook it looks sleek, etc, but I have a black laptop and would like to go for something different and noticeable (White Mac really stands out)! Also my black keys on my current laptop (HP dv2000 series) are really oily/greasy/etc. I live by my computer, usually use it 10 hours a day (in class, at home, wherever!) Anyways sorry for the long post but your opinion matters. Anyone with recent White MacBooks, has there been any discoloring or even signs of it? Also scratches (The tester MacBook I had I used for a day and it may have already scratched...I can live with a few here and there but the obvious ones make me cringe)> So what would you advise? White or Black? ....or Wait till June-August for update! I'm leaning towards White but any proof of yellow discoloring and I will lean the other way! Thanks for your input! |

If you can stand to wait--I'd wait till around June/July and see what Apple updates on the new Macbooks. But if you had to choose--I personally purchased the Black Macbook simply because I knew I could not keep the white MacBook that clean

Maybe it has to do with my darker skin, but whenever I use my sisters' white Macbooks, the stark contrast in skin color to laptop color just unnerves me. I feel no such consternation when using my black Macbook. Either way, you'll be the proud and happy owner of a new Macbook!

I have a white Macbook. I'm a fairly clean person but so far I haven't noticed and discoloration of any sort. If you're worried, you could buy an extremely sleek cover for the trackpad (it's white and smoooth) which would prevent the discoloration for that. For the palm rest (or whole notebook) you could look at the "Invisible Shield".

I've had my white one for quite a while (it's an original CD). Not really any problems with discoloration for me. Also, you pay a fair bit of extra money for just the black color.

Thanks for the input guys.
The votes are split down the middle making it harder for me to decide. I really do like the white and it looks like there aren't any issues with discoloring...Those around me must have one from last year. On a side note $ isn't a factor so I don't mind paying the extra cash for a black one although it would be nice to save it from getting the white. Thanks again guys and keep the advice rolling

I use a white macbook and occasionally i get the palm rest a little dirty. but there is a simple way to clean it. get the magic eraser (i forget which cleaning company makes them i believe it is mr clean.) it takes any dirt off the palm rest with no damage. I have yet to have any permanent discoloration.

I've had my current white MacBook since Nov 07. I'm not aware of any discoloration. I chose the white over black because I'm cheap. Personally I think the black looks better.

I bought my black MacBook because it had the best features. I.E. fastest processor available, largest hard drive etc. It was indeed more money, but paying for it up front saves me from paying for it later. The only thing I added after the initial purchase was RAM (maxed it out at 4GB). The color was a secondary concern for me, but I prefer the black in any case.
The one thing I don't like about the black finish is that it shows EVERY fingerprint and smudge. It's not too hard to wipe down though. If cost is not an object, I'd say get the black one, simply because it's got the best features. |

My wife has black Macbook, used to have black iPod, black external monitor, keyboard, etc. The other ironic thing is that she's the clean-freak, while I work in what some would consider a pig-sty. Perhaps it's because my white Mac and peripherals show dirt a bit better thus I know when I need to clean it. Her black Macbook hides dust better, but the finger prints show up in a certain light. You can't see the finger prints on my white Macbook. I can't vote in the poll because I have both, but yeah either way. New Macbook!

I like the black MB, as well, but chose the white mainly because too many people were complaining about fingerprints on the black MBs. Either way, I'm completely happy with my white MB ... even though I'm not a girl!

nidserz,
I just bought my white Macbook recently - I chose white (and I'm a guy) because to me it doesn't seem to show fingerprints as easily as the black one... The Apple guy I bought mine from uses Monster Screen Cleaner to wipe off the entire interior - keyboard and touch pad as well as the screen. I bought some and it does a good job. Works well on the black ones, too, for you folks with the black Macbook. Go here to take a look: http://www.monstercable.com/productP...t.asp?pin=2105 BTW, I got the 200ml bottle packaged with a nice cleaning rag, at Best Buy for $19.95... I also asked him about cleaning small scratches on the exterior and he said to use a product called AppleSauce... I haven't tried it yet - anybody have any other recommendations for the outside?
