I have just tried to have a Skype conversation with my wife. I could hear her perfectly, but she couldn't hear me.

We were both using the internal microphone and the settings within Skype were all fine, however when I opened the sound preferences in System Preferences, the settings were all ok but when I speak, the little bar doesn't move to indicate the level of sound input, so no sound is being picked up whatsoever.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be? It's a week old Macbook and this is the first time I've tried using it for that purpose, the other Macbook is only two weeks old and worked fine from the moment we bought it.

system prefs>sound>input tab on top>slide input volume over until bars move when you talk. hope this works.

Thanks, but I've tried all of that, even with the tab to the far right, the sound sensor bar doesn't move, so no sound is being registered.

try unchecking the reduce ambient noise box. other than this you might have a defected mic.

Thanks for the suggestion, just tried that and again, nothing. The sound sensor doesn't budge at all, whereas on my other Macbook it goes mental with even the slightest sound.

Looks like its defective, I'll have to take it back.
