iBook - G4 installers not working

Hey.

I just inherited an iBook G4 and I'm at an utter loss at what to do.

After reformatting and reinstalling apps, yahoo messenger, VLC and Toast refuse to open. I've uninstalled and reinstalled but they still don't work. These installers were the same ones that were used on this iBook before i reformatted it.

I thought maybe I was just installing all wrong but my Firefox is up and running.

Help?

This post shows how to install applications if they use .dmg files rather than built-in installers.

that is what I've been doing. they don't want to open. the icons just bob up and down a few times on the dock but nothing else happens.
