This can be accomplished in OS X by simply logging out/logging in again. There is no need to actually shutdown or reboot. Alternatively, there are third-party apps that will dump the RAM on command. OS X really doesn't need to be shut down. The only time I do is when I am transporting the machine and won't be using it for more than 2-3 days (which has happened only twice in the last decade).

What if I only use my Mac for a few hours a day. Is it best to leave the HD spinning for the other 22 hours, day after day?

I usually put my Macs to sleep and use Onyx regularly. I that an acceptable alternative?

Does it shorten your Imacs life span keeping it on sleep when not in use everyday. I generally have it on sleep during the day when not being used and set to shut down about midnight and wake about 8:00am. What would be best for it?
