Hi,

Read the threads on the new iMac line and I don't feel comfortable with the idea of a glossy screen, high temperatures, clocked-down HD, video issues, etc..

So, till the Apple resolves certain issues with the new line, I'll hang on to my white iMac 17 but would like to know if it'll be OK running video editing software (Final Cut, etc.) if I max out the RAM (2GB).

Thanks,
Gene

It's not all that bad. The glossy screen makes the display amazingly sharp. The high temperatures shouldn't bother you cause you aren't going to be touching the Mac unlike a notebook. It runs pretty much silently.

What's this about clocked down HD? Isn't it a desktop 7200rpm SATA HDD? I could be mistaken.

In my opinion, the iMac is quite capable of running Final Cut pro, cause it supports I think 3GB of RAM and it has a fast enough CPU. I've got a Core Duo iMac, and it runs Final Cut pretty well...though I can't play too much with High definition video sources...need a mac pro for that...

Saw the new 20" iMac today and you could see a lot of reflection from the store lights, didn't like that. I wonder why Apple didn't use non-reflective glass (something like anti-glare for eyeglasses). Loved the new keyboard though, think I'll get one but keep my white iMac.

Read that on another forum in a technical thread...

I too have the core duo iMac (17 instead of 20) running at 1.83GHz and you can upgrade the memory up to 2GB max.

Are you referring to the graphics chip? It's an underclocked 2600XT, or an overclocked 2600Pro whichever way you want to look at it. LOL!

I think you got it. There is no such thing as a Clocked Down hard drive.

There is nothing wrong with the new iMac. My iMac G5 2.1Ghz runs very warm and even HOT and it's been running 24 hours a day for 2 years now without one hiccup at all.

The only reason I am not able to purchase a new iMac is $$$ or shall I say LACK of it.

I did notice the reflective screen of the iMac. But as soon as I sat in front of it, and turned it on, the bright display overshadowed the reflections. Anyway, its not like you are going to have the iMac in a room full of windows. Just make sure there is not one directly behind it and it should be find.

Agreed, sitting in front of it while using it I had no issues at all in a Mac store with lots of Windows. Not a problem at all. Very much like the typical newer Laptop with a Glossy display. My Compaq AMD 64 Lappy has a glossy display and I have no issues seeing or using it.

Guess it's a matter of personal taste, anyways, I never buy the first generation of a new product line, they always seem to have glitches that are usually worked out within a few months. Besides, I still like my white iMac, works well, reliable, etc..

Like the new series keyboard though...

LOL! Trying to coax me? Keep it up and you just might... I'm in a situation where I have to get a 2nd computer (for my GF, her Winbox died)) and was thinking of either buying a new iMac 20 and giving her my iMac 17 or keep my iMac (boost the RAM to the max) and buy her the mini, she only uses it for surfing, the occasional word processing and a few simple games (not graphic intensive).

Thing is, as I mentioned in my previous post, saw the new glossy screen and there was a lot of reflection from the store lights which I didn't like (colors were vivid though). Also read on some of the threads that the graphic hardware is better in the white iMac series than in the new line.

Decisions, decisions...

Cheers,
Gene

Nor is there anything wrong with his current iMac (I know you didn't mean that or even hint at it, dtrav). Your iMac is barely two years old.

If your GF needs a new computer (her needs seem fairly basic and 'vanilla') any computer will fit that job. See what she wants or prefers.

True, bought my iMac 15 months ago, boosting my RAM to 2 GB would be sufficient to run video editing software (I hope).

She'd like to try a Mac, tired of all Windoze crashes, viruses, spyware, etc.

Agreed! My imac is the 2.1Ghz G5 iSight and it's still a very good and useable machine even for my craziness!

LOL! I think we're still kids when it comes to toys, I would buy the new iMac just for it's looks.

Would be a heck of a lot cheaper (now I'm being rational) to keep my iMac (still 21 months of warranty left) and get her the basic mini, we have a flat screen monitor from her defunct Winbox, a couple of keyboards and a brand-new Mighty Mouse (which I don't use cause I hate it).

So, $650. for a mini and $100. for upgrading my iMac's memory is a heck of a lot cheaper than the new iMac 20, 2.4GHz machine...

Back to one of my questions, can I do decent video editing with 2GHz RAM?

Cheers,
Gene
