iMac - Wont write CDs now????

Here's my problem.
I use to write numerous CDs & DVDs to send my images to clients, but now for some odd reason, i can now only write DVDs. when i try a CD it writes for a bit but then comes up with an error.
Ive tried using my normal app, Toast 6 and also the inbuilt burn CD in the iMac and have the same problem. I have connected an external CD/DVD burner and again no CDs, just DVD. I have also tried different makes and batches of CD manufacturers but to no avail.
Got me stumped!

Any thoughts much appreciated
