iMac - Circle image, clicking sound, no boot up

I have an iMac G3. A few weeks ago it shut off unexpectedly, but it never happened again. Now, when I press the power button, a pixelated circle a couple of inches in diameter appears near the top of the screen and immediately vanishes, there's a clicking sound, and then nothing happens. It doesn't boot up. I can shut down the computer by holding the power button for a few seconds. I see a faint ghost image on the screen.

Help!
